The basic idea of String Theory

The basic idea of String Theory is that all matter is made out of small vibrating loops, called strings. This theory was created to answer the paradox of the large and small. There were two theories, General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. These theories proved crucial to physics, but they were conflicting. General Relativity was relevant to very large things, and Quantum Mechanics dealt with very small things. But sometimes it was necessary to use both at once. In a black hole, things get compacted from huge volumes into super-dense tiny bits of matter. But when you try to merge the two theories by themselves, you get very strange answers. String Theory hopes to provide a universal theory. This theory would build on the foundations of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics to encompass everything in the universe.
